Antique Heart Pine has become rare with a steadily diminishing supply. Old-growth longleaf pine, the tree from which Antique Heart Pine comes, is  extinct from the stand point of harvesting . Today, two sources of antique pine are timbers reclaimed from old buildings or logs recovered from river bottoms (sinkers). Note: Most antique woods are pine. Saying that we must also indicate that there is  untold billions of board feet of other types of lumber at the bottom of lakes and rivers throughout this country. i.e. Any lumbering project that transported logs by water, will have sinkers in those waterways.

There are four primary differences between antique heart pine and new pine that influence consumers when choosing a wood. Those are color, hardness/durability, cost, and environmental impact. And although Antique Heart Pine starts out a yellow color when it is first milled, it turns red after exposure to natural light. The high resin content enables the wood to turn the rich tone without using chemicals to attain these hues. The same by-product also provides the ability to repel water and insects.

Expect a difference in price when there is a difference in a product. Rediscovered heart pine will cost a good deal more than what new heart pine costs and for good reasons.
